Welcoming a newborn into your family is a precious and fleeting moment. Capturing those early days in beautiful photographs allows you to cherish these memories for a lifetime. A successful newborn photoshoot requires careful planning and a gentle touch. To ensure you get the most out of your session, here are 10 essential tips:
1. Schedule in Advance:
Newborns are best photographed within the first two weeks of life when they’re still sleepy and naturally curl up. You can book your appointment while you are still pregnant, we pencil the date in and confirm it following baby’s arrival. As much as possible we try to photograph within a 10-20 day window, but with a little added patience, it is will possible to take newborn photos of a slightly older baby.
2. Choose the Right Time:
Opt for a time when your baby is well-rested and content. For example, this might mean working around feeding and napping schedules. However, I understand that routines are still in flux at this stage. My general recommendation is to schedule the session in the morning if possible.
3. Keep It Cozy:
Newborns love warmth and comfort. To keep them feeling safe and secure, we heat the studio. Please also consider that when dressing yourself on the day of your session. Therefore dress lightly or in layers.
4. Prioritize Safety:
Safety is paramount during a newborn photoshoot. I am very experienced with newborns and update my safety training as often as possible. I will never put baby in any situation or position that is dangerous.
5. Relax and Be Patient:
Babies can be unpredictable, and patience is key. As such, our schedule intentionally allows for breaks if your little one needs feeding, soothing, or changing. This is why we schedule up to 3 hours for a newborn session.
6. Prepare the Space:
During your session there are many things in the studio which are designed to help your baby go to sleep. I play lullabies, diffuse relaxing essential oils and keep the space dimly lit. For the same reason, many parents succumb to the relaxing atmosphere and fall asleep on the studio couch.
7. Capture the Details:
Those tiny fingers, toes, and eyelashes are what make newborns so special. I will be sure to capture close-ups of these delicate features.
8. Dress Simply:
If you are going to be in photos, the general rule is to wear solid colours. (While also coordinating with any other family members) However, I understand that outfit choice can stress some people out. For that reason, help with outfit choices is included in your session consultation.
9. Involve Family:
Newborn photos aren’t just about the baby. They are also about your growing family. Some of the most touching photos feature siblings holding the new baby. There are many safe ways to include older siblings – even if the photo has to be a composite. You should consider including parents, siblings, and even pets for heartwarming family portraits.
10. Embrace Natural Moments:
While posed shots are adorable, candid moments are equally precious. I will capture the fleeting expressions and interactions that make your baby unique.
Remember, a successful newborn photoshoot is about capturing the essence of your baby’s earliest days. It’s a blend of careful planning and going with the flow. These tips will prepare you for a stress-free and beautiful photoshoot that will preserve the magic of your newborn’s fleeting moments forever.
